Plan your Breakaway in the Bush this Year

Plan your Breakaway in the Bush this Year

The key to planning the best kind of bush breakaway is to know when to go, and we’re not just talking about the best time of year according to the weather.

For the South African holiday maker looking to plan a trip around the various South African holidays, our handy month by month guide is going to be the perfect planning companion.

January

New Year’s Day and New Year’s Day Observed - January 1st and 2nd

The new year starts and with fresh new eyes and a clear mind, this is the month for day dreaming about your next bush breakaway. Generally, January is not a holiday month, what with the school holidays and the annual December break coming to an end. But along with being a great month to think ahead, January can also be the perfect month to plan a trip into the bush, especially if you are not travelling with children. In most reserves, including Mjejane Game Reserve, the holiday makers are nowhere to be seen, making a stay here during this month a peaceful one.

February

Valentine’s Day – February 14th

This Valentine’s Day, why not make it a family occasion by booking over a long weekend to include this special day? The various lodges in Mjejane Reserve are big enough for large groups, which makes a holiday here comfortable and memorable.

March

Human Rights Day – March 21st

First Term School Holidays – March 24th to April 12th

The first term school holidays begin this month, on the 20th, and with the weather finally cooling off, now is the perfect time to have a relaxed family break. Mjejane in March is simply beautiful and with the 21st being a public holiday as well, you will have extra time to add to your trip. Wildlife sightings at this time of year are abundant.

April

Good Friday – April 7th

Family Day – April 10th

Freedom Day – April 27th

The Easter long weekend this year is from the 7th of April to the 10th of April, and although you can expect crowds in the more popular places, like the Kruger National Park, Mjejane Game Reserve is likely to be far quieter, simply because the reserve is so much more exclusive than the more publicly accessible places. Bring the family, plan a fun egg hunt, and enjoy the cooler weather, April is a fantastic month to travel.

May

Workers’ Day – May 1st

With winter on the horizon, May is considered one of the best times of year to travel to Mjejane. This month has one long weekend, as Workers’ Day falls on a Monday, and so if you are looking for a short breakaway, now is the perfect time. The weather at this time of year is not too warm, and since the rains have come to an end, and the vegetation is dying back, you can expect to see lots of wildlife.

June

Youth Day – June 16th

Second Term School Holidays – June 23rd to July 18th

The only public holiday in June is Youth Day, and this year it falls on a Friday, giving you a long weekend which you can spend in Mjejane Game Reserve. The weather at this time of the year is just perfect for a holiday here, with warm sunny sundowners on the deck and evenings spent sitting by the fire making it a memorable winter retreat.

July

Mjejane Game Reserve is now in the heart of winter and the days are cold and clear. The dryness makes it easy to see wildlife and to also truly appreciate the beauty of the landscape. The second term school holidays fall between June and July. If you are hoping for a family break, be sure to plan well ahead to avoid the rush.

August

Women’s Day – August 9th

A month known for its smoky weather and its occasional hot days that remind visitors of the coming summer, when you visit Mjejane in August there is much to look forward to including excellent game viewing and enough warmth to spend much of your time outdoors enjoying the springish weather. The only public holiday this month is Women’s Day, which falls on a Wednesday. You can think about planning a long weekend, taking an extra 2 days off, to make the most of this holiday.

September

Heritage Day – September 24th

Third Term School Holidays – September 29th to October 10th

The wilderness bursts into colour this month, and the smell of flowers fills the air. With Heritage Day falling on a Sunday this year, you’ll have a long weekend available to you for your bush break. What better place to celebrate your heritage than with a stay in Mjejane, close to our most important heritage, our wildlife? If you are travelling with family, keep in mind that the school holidays for the third term begins on the 29th of this month and continues on until the 10th of October.

October

With part of the school holidays falling in October, now is a fantastic time to visit Mjejane and have that final short break to give you the energy you need to take on stress of the last few months of the year.

November

The heat of the summer has returned and luckily for those who want to travel now, to avoid the December holiday crowds, most places in Mjejane Game Reserve have swimming pools and air conditioners. If you are travelling as a couple or as a small family group, November is an ideal time to have a weekend or week away.

December

Day of Reconciliation – December 16th

Christmas Day – December 25th

Family Day – December 26th

Fourth Term School Holidays – December 15th

Mjejane Game Reserve is a wonderful place to spend your festive break. While the nearby Kruger is going to be packed with tourists, since the Mjejane is a private reserve, you won’t have to fight through the holiday crowds if you book your stay here. If you are looking for an idyllic place for your annual year end breakaway, a bush retreat is one of the very best ways that you can revive your mind, spend quality time with your loved ones and really make the most of your downtime. Be sure to plan well ahead, as the accommodation can be booked up quite fast at this time of the year.
